Na Meo is the Laos border crossing closest to Hanoi by distance, tucked into the mountains of western Thanh Hoa province opposite Nam Soi in Laos. The distance is short on paper, but the last stretch is a winding provincial road, so the drive takes longer than the distance suggests.
Na Meo is our standard Laos route and the one we run most often for travellers whose passport cannot enter China visa-free (US, Indian, Filipino, South African and many others). It is a quiet gate with little traffic: no queues, a calm crossing and a scenic drive. Preparation is simple because we handle it: a Laos visa arranged in advance in Hanoi and a Vietnam e-visa that names Na Meo as the entry port.
Not everyone needs that Laos visa. Per the official exemption list from the Department of Immigration of Lao PDR, ordinary passport holders from every ASEAN country, plus Japan, South Korea, Mongolia and Russia, enter Laos visa-free for 14–30 days. - The gate closes earlier than the larger crossings; a very early start is essential.
- Mountain road: it is a long day, especially if you are travelling with young children.
