Vietnam visa expires tomorrow? Here are your real options from Hanoi

Short version: with one day left you can still avoid an overstay, but only if a re-entry document already exists or you leave by air. A brand-new e-visa cannot be issued in a day through official channels. Here is how to think about it, hour by hour.

First, check the exact date

Your permitted stay ends on the date written on your entry stamp or e-visa ("valid until" / "ngày hết hạn"). That day itself still counts as a legal day; you must exit by the end of it. Many people misread the entry date as the expiry date, or count 30 days from arrival when the stamp says 29. Read the stamp.

Option 1: Visa Run by land (only if your re-entry document already exists)

A Visa Run means exiting to Laos or China and re-entering Vietnam. To re-enter you need one of:

• An approved new e-visa that names the land border you will use and starts on your return date, or
• A valid multiple-entry visa or TRC, or
• A visa-exempt passport (UK, most EU, Japan, Korea, ASEAN and others).

If you have one of these, a same-day run to Huu Nghi (for China visa-free passports or Chinese-visa holders) is realistic even with one day left. Departure early morning, back in Hanoi by evening. Details on the Huu Nghi route page.

If your passport is not China visa-free (US, India, Philippines, South Africa and others), the Laos gates need a Laos visa arranged in advance, except Lao Bao, which is 600 km away. With one day left, the land option is usually not realistic for you. Read on.

Option 2: Exit by air

A flight from Noi Bai to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Vientiane gets you out before midnight. You then apply for a new Vietnam e-visa from abroad (5 working days standard) and fly back. It costs more than a land run, but it prevents an overstay, and an overstay is far more expensive than a flight. We are happy to advise on this even though it is not our service.

Option 3: Visa extension (limited)

Some visa types can be extended from inside Vietnam, but since 2025 tourist (DL) extensions are granted less often, and an application cannot be filed on the last day. If your visa is a business or work-related category, contact MP Viet Visa immediately; there may be a route. Do not assume.

What happens if you overstay

Under Decree 282/2025 (in force since 15 December 2025) overstay fines roughly doubled. Short overstays are fined at the exit counter; longer ones can mean deportation and an entry ban, and can complicate future work permits and residence cards. An overstay of even a day is recorded. It is not "no big deal", whatever a forum says.

Mistakes that make it worse

• Applying for two e-visas with overlapping dates; the system can block both.
• Choosing "Noi Bai Airport" as the entry port and then arriving at a land border.
• Paying someone who "guarantees" a same-day e-visa.
• Going to the border with an overstay hoping to "just pay the fine" on the way out and re-enter. You may pay the fine; re-entry is another matter.
• Waiting until tomorrow morning to ask for help.
