Who can use the Huu Nghi border
Huu Nghi (the Friendship Pass) is the crossing into Pingxiang, China. To do a Visa Run there you must be allowed into China, even for a few hours. That means one of three things:
- your passport is covered by China's unilateral visa-free policy (see the list of China visa-free countries);
- your country has a treaty exemption (see the 29 mutual-exemption countries);
- you already hold a valid Chinese visa.
Send us your nationality and we will confirm your status on the day you book and again before departure, because these lists change.
A typical day from Hai Phong
Hai Phong is farther from Huu Nghi than Hanoi is, so the day starts earlier. Exact times depend on traffic and the border queue, and we confirm them with you the day before. The border closes at 19:00 on the Vietnamese side.
- Around 03:30–04:00: pick-up at your address in Hai Phong.
- Around 08:00–08:30: arrive at Huu Nghi, about four hours on the road. Take the electric shuttle to the Vietnamese exit hall and get your exit stamp.
- Morning: cross to the Chinese side, complete Chinese entry and exit, and walk or have lunch in Pingxiang if time allows.
- Late morning to early afternoon: return to the Vietnamese entry counter with your passport and printed new e-visa. Receive your new entry stamp.
- Afternoon: drive back to Hai Phong and drop-off at your door, usually in the early evening.
The distance from Hai Phong to Huu Nghi is roughly 250 km on our usual route via the Hanoi–Lang Son expressway, and travel time is roughly four hours each way. These are estimates; the real time depends on the day. Plan no appointments for that evening. For the counter-by-counter detail, read what happens at the border.
Your new e-visa: the one thing to get right
The crossing only works if you re-enter Vietnam on a valid new visa or exemption. If you need a new e-visa:
- choose Huu Nghi Landport (Lang Son) as the entry port;
- set the start date to your return date, not earlier;
- make sure your name and passport number match the passport exactly.
We can apply for you with our express e-visa, ready in 3–4 hours, so you can book the trip even when your visa is close to expiring. If you are in a rush, read urgent Visa Run. For the full step-by-step, see how to do a Visa Run.
If your passport cannot enter China
US, Indian, Filipino and South African passports, among others, are not covered by China's visa-free rules, so Huu Nghi only works with a Chinese visa. Without one, the Laos borders are the option, from Hanoi: Na Meo and Lao Bao. Tell us your nationality and we will point you to the right one.
